I graduated from the School of Hygiene at Old Dominion University, Magna Cum Laude, in May 1981. Having been a hygienist for 34 years, I have spent 17 of those years in a periodontal practice. I am very particular about where I work and feel honored to work with Dr. Rutledge and his wonderful team. I find the team to possess very high levels of competency, integrity, and compassion. I realize it is hard to switch from one health professional to another, but I promise I will take very good care of you. I am patient and easy to talk to and I welcome any questions you have for me.
My passion in life is philanthropy. I have chosen to use my dental skills and experience to not only benefit those in our community but in 3rd world regions. I have put together and been involved in a number of dental mission trips to Thailand, Guatemala, Jamaica and Mexico. I also work heavily with the homeless in our area, including helping them with their dental needs. Dental hygiene is not just a job to me but a means by which I can make a difference in the lives of those I come in contact with.
I was born and raised in Chesapeake, Virginia. My husband, Ed, and I have 4 children. Our oldest, Chip, lives and works outside of Raleigh, NC. He and his wife have blessed us with 3 wonderful grandsons. Our son, Kyle, graduated from NC State in 2015 and earned a degree in Statistics and a degree in Business. He works as a Statistician in Raleigh, NC. Amy, our only daughter, graduated from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas in May 2016. She received her BS in Nursing and landed her dream job as an Emergency Room nurse at Duke in North Carolina. She and her fiancé, Ben, were married in October 2017. Our youngest child, Adam, is a sophomore at James Madison University and is studying Engineering and Physics.
I am a very family oriented person. Nothing thrills me more than having my children or grandchildren around. Our hobbies include swimming, boating, riding jet skis, and snow skiing. We ride our bikes often and like to go camping. But I have been told that my version of camping in a motor home with AC is not really camping. We have 2 cats, Sky and Aslan, which are definitely members of our family.
Kelly was born and raised in the Hampton Roads area. Following high school graduation, she completed the dental assisting program at Medical Careers Institute which led her into a career as a dental assistant for over 10 years. During that time, she worked in general and cosmetic dentistry and found great joy in caring for others. She elected to further her career by returning to college and pursuing a career in dental hygiene. She graduated from Thomas Nelson Community College Dental Hygiene Program and is now continuing her education further through Old Dominion University’s accelerated Bachelor/Master’s program for dental hygiene. She specializes in compassionate care and we are grateful she has agreed to share in caring for our patients.
When Kelly isn’t helping others through oral health she enjoys life with her husband Kenny, with whom she resides in Newport News.
